12.20 INTERVIEW: The Black Keys  

The Black Keys have released their tenth studio album, Delta Kream, celebrating the band’s roots. The album features eleven Mississippi hill country blues standards that the band has loved since they were teenagers before they were a band, including songs by R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others.

Delta Kream was recorded at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, where they were joined by musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton, who are long-time members of the bands of blues legends including R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough.

Charlotte Ryan spoke to one half of the Black Keys, Patrick Carney, about the band's love of this traditional sound.

1.15 2021 Country Music Awards Finalists Announced 

Recorded Music New Zealand and APRA AMCOS NZ have today announced this year's finalists for Best Country Music Artist and Song. The award recognises outstanding contributions to the Aotearoa country music scene in the last year. 

Current country music Queen Tami Neilson leads the nominations, as a finalist in both te Kaipuoro Tuawhenua Toa | Best Country Music Artist for her album CHICKABOOM, and APRA Best Country Music Song for ‘Queenie Queenie’. 

Joining Neilson in Best Country Music Artist category is former winner Jody Direen for her album Smokin’ Ashes and Christchurch/ Ōtautahi newcomer Ryan Fisherman for his debut album Vibe.

In the APRA Best Country Music Song category, Neilson is joined by Delaney Davidson for ‘Sleep’ and Kendall Elise Todd for ‘Between Hello and Goodbye’.

RNZ Music is proud to present our new series of live sessions with some of Aotearoa's best.

Tāmaki-based hip-hop duo Church & Ap and producer Dera Meelan brought the fire to Te Oro Arts Centre in Glen Innes and performed hits from their newest release AT THY FEET (Side B).

Martin Phillipps and The Chills are one of the most enduring Flying Nun acts of label’s four decades. 

There have been international highs well documented personal lows in the life of the chief Chills Martin Phillipps, of which he touched on in his first Musical Chairs appearance in 1998. 

Now, over twenty years later, with several albums and documentary film about his musical and health scares Martin Phillipps’ returns to Musical Chairs.

Actress Michelle Langstone is an award-winning actress with a career that spans over 20 years. She’s well known in both Aotearoa and Australia, appearing in shows like McLeod’s Daughters, Shortland Street, One Lane Bridge and The Almighty Johnsons. 

It was in her 30’s that Michelle discovered her love and talent for writing. 

Michelle has won the Best First Person Essay award at the Voyager Media Awards in 2019 and the award for Best Interview or Profile at the Voyager Media Awards in 2020.

She is a regular contributor to North & South, The New Zealand Herald and The Spinoff website.

Michelle has just released a collection of essays titled Times Like These- on Grief, hope and remarkable love. She joins Charlotte Ryan to chat about the new book, her life journey so far, and course chooses her favourite songs on this episode of The Mixtape.
