A fascinating article has been doing the rounds online this week, called ‘Is Old Music Killing New Music’, based on new data showing that songs older than eighteen months now make up 70% of US streaming numbers, and that the new music market is shrinking.
12:15 Te Kaahu
Its Tony Stamps last show hosting for a while so he wanted to check in on some of his favourite up and coming local musicians, see how their summer has been, and get them to suggest a song they’ve been loving. We’re going to start with Theia, the wahine behind the beautiful te reo Maori waiatas of Te Kaahu. First let’s hear her performing the song Rangirara. She plays it forward with Syd's Missing you.
12:30 Jazmine Mary
Jazmine Mary is a Tamaki Makaurau musician who makes folk music with big emotions, their album The Licking of a Tangerine was one of Tony's favourites last year. He contacted them on Zoom to see how their summer has been. Before our chat we'll hear the beautiful Jazmine Mary song ‘Fool’, and then Jazmine 'Plays It Forward' with 'Hand Habits - Just To Hear You' feat. Perfume Genius.
1pm The Sampler Best Of International Albums of 2021
Tony Stamp looks back at some of his favourite international albums of 2021, including UK soul, Scottish post-rock, American folk songs about movies, and more.
2:10 Pickle Darling
The Pickle Darling album Cosmonaut was a lo-fi highlight of last year, and from it this is ‘Everything Is Flammable’. Pickle Darling 'Plays It Forward' with Bedbug's - 'Songs About Ghosts'.
Betty-Anne Monga of Ardijah fame appears alongside young and talented musicians HINA, Disciple Pati, Jhasmyne and Emily Muli for a supreme showcase of musical prowess at The Civic Club. Powerful vocals from these Maori and Pacific wahine toa will have you foot-tapping and dancing as a new generation of songstresses takes flight.
2:45 Fable
Papakura musician Fable released an excellent EP called ‘I’ll See You in Hawaiki’ last year. Tony has been a fan of his since his song ‘Weekend’ in 2019.Tony checked in with Fable to see how his summer has gone, but before we hear that let’s listen to his song ‘Karakia’.
3pm Aotearoa Hip Hip Series Episode 4
In this six-part series Phil Bell presents a deep dive into the origins and stories of this country’s love of Hip hop – talking to the originators the instigators, and the influencers about how Hip Hop has imprinted itself on the fabric of New Zealand’s music culture.
Listen in at the same time next week here on RNZ National for Episode 5 of Aotearoa Hip Hop - where DLT leaves Upper Hutt Posse to help form another legendary New Zealand act, Dam Native. We meet Zane Lowe, Ollie Green & Rob Salmon who form Leaders of Style and Urban Disturbance and also look into the crossover between the Aotearoa Jazz and Hip Hop scenes.

4pm The Mixtape - Andre Upston
Andre Upston has been working as a recording engineer at RNZ for over twenty five years. For the latter part of his career he’s been RNZ's dedicated music engineer in Auckland. So when listeners hear a musical act performing on RNZ, in-studio or at a live concert, it’s often thanks to him.
Andre's helped record albums for Bic Runga, Dudley Benson, Anika Moa, and more, and for his Mixtape he's chosen seven songs he personally recorded.
