This month marks 40 years since the release of Purple Rain, the 1984 American romantic rock musical film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut.

The semi-autobiographical story in the film follows a musician's rise to superstardom, and it was a huge success - Prince became the first artist to ever have the top movie, album, and single at the same time.
