1:15 Troy Kingi: On his journey into Joshua Tree desert to record latest album

Award winning local musician Troy Kingi released his 8th album yesterday Leatherman & the Mojave Green.

The artist has a creatively ambitious goal to release ten albums, in ten years - and for every album to explore a different genre of music. 

This is Troy Kingi’s rock album. Inspired by bands like Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal and the iconic Desert Sessions, Troy took his full band to the legendary 'Rancho de la Luna' studio in Joshua Tree, California. 

Troy talks to Charlotte Ryan about the transformative experience of writing and recording music in the desert, which is captured in a documentary series called ‘Troy Kingi’s Desert Hikoi’ screening on RNZ now.

2:15 Marlin’s Dreaming: Live in studio with new album HIRL

Indie pop band Marlin’s Dreaming is live in the RNZ studio to celebrate the release of their fourth studio album HIRL.  

Formed by longtime friends in Dunedin, the band have moved to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and the album touches on feelings of both disconnection and inspiration from the change.

Marlin’s Dreaming have toured with Parquet Courts, The Chills and Dope Lemon and have played sold out shows in New Zealand and Australia..

3:15 Lawrence Arabia on re-creating Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

The Come Together series creates Kiwi supergroups to perform the world’s biggest rock albums.   

James Milne (Lawrence Arabia) will join Dianne Swann (When the Cats Away) and The Phoenix Foundation legends Sam Scott and Luke Buda to recreate The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

James joins Charlotte Ryan for a deep dive of the album that confirmed the Beatles as the finest craftsmen of their generation.

Our guest on the Mixtape is Kiwi actor, comedian, writer and director Jesse Griffin. 

Jesse is the co-creator of Educators, as well as starring in Nude Tuesday, 7 Days, 800 Days. Many will be familiar with his American country music character Wilson Dixon which UK magazine Time Out credits as delivering “some of the funniest songs you'll ever hear”.
