1:20 Fontaines D.C: ‘Romance lives between light and dark’

Fontaines D.C would have to be one of the biggest bands in the world right now. The five piece Irish band formed in Dublin in 2017 and quickly gained momentum for their fantastic live performances and song lyrics that explore Irish identity, modern life.

Charlotte Ryan stayed up late to speak to guitarist Conor Curley ahead of the chaotic schedule with new album release, Romance.

3.15  KOMMI: On ‘WitchHop’ & working with Marlon Williams

KOMMI (Kāi Tahu, Te-Āti-Awa) is a Lyttelton-based rapper who performs in Kāi Tahu dialect - the principal Māori iwi of the South Island. They are also a writer, poet, activist and kaiako - lecturing in Māori and Indigenous Studies and Te Reo Māori.

Ahead of their show at WORD Christchurch, KOMMI joins Charlotte Ryan to talk about their new EP Tauwhenua which explores being haunted, being hōhā, mākutu (witchcraft) and tūrehu (faeries).

Combine all that with the soulful sounds of Marlon Williams, who guests on the album, and it’s an addictive listen.

KOMMI performs at WORD Christchurch this Friday, August 30, at the Piano.

4pm  The Mixtape: Travelling poet David Merritt

You may have spotted our Mixtape guest outside a bookshop or cafe on the main street of your town, sitting behind a card table displaying neatly stacked poems, each with a signature hand stamped cover.

David Merritt is a former student newspaper editor, University lecturer and old friend of Flying Nun Records.

Today, he lives and works as a full time poet - a rare gig in New Zealand. He spends his days touring the country, with a box of poetry, which he sells, trades or gives away.

Yesterday National Poetry Day was celebrated across the country. Poets took to the footpaths, bars, bookshops and local libraries. To mark the day, David Merritt joins Charlotte Ryan for an hour of music and talk.
