The dynamic singer/songwriter behind Moana and the Moa Hunters talks about her life, her career, and the challenges of creating a truly indigenous style of music.

Moana Maniapoto-Jackson and her band Moana and the Moahunters are at the forefront of a new style of music incorporating Māori language and instruments.

Moana has been singing in te reo Māori for the past 10 years, first with Wellington band Aotearoa and since then as the lead singer and songwriter with The Moahunters.

Her latest album Rua came out a few months ago and has received high critical acclaim for its distinctive and successful blend of Māori and Pakeha instruments, and styles, reflecting our multicultural society.
