With a single tweet, El-P – the rapper and producer behind Run the Jewels – announced he was working with The Veils, the Finn Andrews-fronted ex-Auckland band that now call London home.
"We sort of knew he was a fan of our stuff which was cool and didn't really think about it beyond that, and then met up with him in Los Angeles and went out for some drinks with him and his friend BOOTS," says Finn.
"The next day we went into a studio with my friend Wilder Zoby, and me and Finn came up with 'Axolotl'," El-P adds. "And that was kind of the start of the whole thing."
The product of recording sessions in Europe and the US, The Veils have delivered their fifth studio album, Total Depravity, a release that carves out middle ground between the collaborators’ musical worlds.
Sam Wicks speaks with El-P and Finn Andrews about how their unlikely collaboration came together.
