Dunedin-based singer-songwriter Bill Direen's first group 'The Vacuum' inspired U.S. record label Siltbreeze to credit Direen with being “the clay tablet from which all great Christchurch groups worth a plug would glean substance to formulate THAT sound.”
With their 1983 album 'Beatin Hearts', Direen's the Builders were the first group to release a long playing studio album on Flying Nun Records. 'Beatin Hearts has just been re-issued by Brooklyn's Grapefruit Record Club. Kiran Dass caught up with Direen at the end of his recent four date tour of New Zealand.
