RNZ Music is proud to be the first to share the new single and video from Northland musician Troy Kingi. ‘Babylon Grows’ is from his new album Holy Colony Burning Acres, which is due out in July.
Holy Colony Burning Acres is the third instalment of Troy Kingi’s aspirational “10|10|10” series – ten albums in ten genres in ten years.
In contrast to the psychedelia of his last album Shake That Skinny Ass All The Way To Zygertron, Holy Colony Burning Acres is an electrifyingly 70s-styled deep roots/reggae record.
The album delves into indigenous politics, especially colonisation and the crippling effect it’s had on societies the world over.
With so many issues affecting Māori right now, Troy says he wanted to be a voice for those who don’t have one. Then – after a bit of research, and meeting with indigenous friends around the world, he decided to incorporate their stories into the album too.
In the track ‘Bird of Paradise’ Troy sings about the injustices of West Papua; in ‘Truganini’ he sings about the last full bloodied Tasmanian aboriginal.
The album is due out on July 12th.
