8:30 Window on The World

Robots that navigate sewer pipes are being used to find leaks and blockages in an ancient water system. They're being put to work in India, to access dangerous and noxious spots that otherwise would be checked by people.

But the machines also replace manual work that is done by some of the poorest members of Indian society. We explore what it will mean for their wellbeing and livelihoods.

A worker employed by the KWA working inside a manhole near Pettha to clear a block in the sewage line. The irony is that even as "Bandicoot" the sewage cleaning robot developed by Kerala, struggles to find users in the home state, the robot has replaced manual scavengers in five other states with Gujarat being the latest one.
