9:07 Bringing Indian raga music to Aotearoa

Manjit Singh is on a quest to bring Indian music to the people of Aotearoa. Originally hailing from Punjab in India, Manjit plays tabla - a pair of hand drums fundamental to classical Indian music. He has performed alongside the likes of jazz legends Nathan Haines and Jonathan Crayford, as well as hip-hop star Tom Scott at the NZ Music Awards.

Manjit has also started teaching a new paper at the University of Auckland about the Ragas of India.

9:30 Four new species of tardigrades found in Southern Alps

Four new species of tardigrade - also known as water bears or moss piglets - have been discovered in the glaciers of the Southern Alps.

Tardigrades are microscopic, eight-legged, invertebrate animals known for their ability to withstand Earth's most extreme environments. 

Professor Peter Dearden from the Biochemistry department at University of Otago is one of the co-authors on the paper published in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution about the discovery of new tardigrade species.

10:18 Mackle returns for second term as Kaikōura mayor

Some districts kicked off the week with a fresh face in charge, but in Kaikōura the mayor is a familiar face. Craig Mackle won a big vote of confidence from his constituents, scoring a second term as mayor with more than two-thirds of the vote.

10:35 Fifty years of years of pride, protest and parades

Fifty years of Aotearoa's Gay Liberation Movement is being celebrated with the Pride and Protest exhibition as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival. The country's first 'Gay Day' was in 1972, a protest by a newly formed Gay Liberation Group in Auckland’s Albert Park. Since then Pride has morphed into a month-long celebration that coincides with the international Pride movement

Sarah Buxton from the Charlotte Museum is the brains behind the exhibition which is on at Te Atatū Peninsula Community Hub until Sunday 16 October.

10:45 Paranormal investigator carries grandparents' famous legacy

Chris McKinnell's world is all about the paranormal. He's the grandson of world-famous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, whose experiences spawned the deeply spooky Conjuring movie franchise. Chris co-founded The Warren Legacy Foundation for Paranormal Research alongside his grandmother in 2014.

He is currently in New Zealand and will be speaking live at Orewa Arts and Events Center on Friday 14 October for a special event in collaboration with Haunted New Zealand.
