Early New Years Day 1918 as it brought returning soldiers from the First World War, the HMY Iolaire went down a few yards from shore and about a mile from the safety of Stornoway Harbour. One of the worst UK maritime disasters of the 20th century, at least 201 men perished of the 283 aboard.
