What machines can learn from the dung beetle

From Nights, 9:30 pm on 26 August 2024

In 2013, researchers in Sweden made a shocking discovery: the humble dung beetle was using the Milky Way as a navigational guide to roll its signature balls of dung.

And now engineers in Australia have developed groundbreaking AI sensors inspired by the insects' abilities which could allow drones and robots to navigate in low-light.

The study is just the latest in biomimicry research.

Study lead Professor Javaan Chahl from the University of South Australia joins Emile Donovan.
