Across the United States, particularly on the East Coast, dozens of unidentified drone sightings have been reported.
As well as security concerns, the sightings have been connected to conspiracy theories about foreign agents and secret government plots.
Robert Bartholomew, author of the book Social Panics and Phantom Attackers, an honorary senior lecturer in the School of Psychological Medicine at Auckland University says the brain is wired to connect dots, and that this drone scare fits within historic mass sightings of UFOs and other supernatural phenomena.
He speaks to Maggie Tweedie about what's really going on.
