Thousands of items made from endangered species confiscated at the border

From Nights, 10:45 pm on 9 April 2025

You may not have heard the acronym CITES before, but last year more than 6,000 items were seized and surrendered under its watch.

CITES stands for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, and it monitors and regulates the international movement of items made from protected species.

Mark Ryan is the Department of Conservation's Border Operations Team Lead and he speaks to Emile about what's being confiscated at the border.
