Stephen Stone acquitted after 25 years in prison

From Nights, 10:18 pm on 30 April 2025

Stephen Stone was convicted in 1999 for the murder of Dean Fuller Sandys, and the rape and murder of Leah Stephens. This morning, his retrial was cancelled.

The case was brought into the spotlight by the RNZ and Stuff podcast Gone Fishing back in 2018.

Since then, private investigator Tim McKinnel has been working to clear the convictions of the group involved: last year, Gail Maney, Colin Maney and Mark Henriksen had their convictions quashed.

Adam Dudding, co-host of the award-winning Gone Fishing, joins Emile Donovan to reflect on the path to acquittal.
