09:05 New regulations for the sale of NZ farmland to overseas investors

From December, ministers will have "extra flexibility'' to consider a wider range of issues - including large-scale ownership of farmland - when assessing overseas investment applications for sensitive land. However, the Overseas Investment Act will not be changed because Finance Minister Bill English says the uncertainty would outweigh potential benefits. But government ministers will be able to consider New Zealand's economic interests and whether an overseas investment provides opportunities for local involvement. Sir Bruce Slane, a member of the Save the Farms lobby group and former president of the NZ Law Society; David Boswell, Partner at law firm Bell Gully, who specialises in overseas investment.
