The Justice Select committee is part way through a nationwide tour, hearing 3500 submissions on the bill in person, out of a total of 35,000 written submissions.

The prescription of drugs designed to treat conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions has increased in New Zealand by almost 50% in less than ten years, according to the first local study of its kind. But instead of indicating an increase in diagnosable psychiatric disorders, it's possible people are using the prescription drug 'off-label' to calm, relax, control or aid their sleep.
