Enzyme engineer Professor David Ackerley runs the biotechnology lab at Victoria University in Wellington and looks into engineering enzymes that could help make chemotherapy more effective for cancer patients.
He has also worked on enzymes that detoxify environmental pollutants and on finding new antibiotics.
He uses "directed evolution" to manipulate enzymes and discusses with Kathryn what can be achieved with the research.
