Inflation edged higher at the start of the year.

Stats NZ says the Consumer Price Index rose 0.9 percent in the three months ended March, taking the annual rate to 2.5 percent, compared to 2.2 percent in the previous quarter.

The headline rate is within the Reserve Bank's target band of 1 to 3 percent.
