Whau River
From Nine to Noon 24 February 2014
The Whau River, which reaches the Waitemata Harbour at Te Atatu, was once the route by which Maori crossed between the Waitemata and the Manukau. Like many Auckland rivers, it was in a poor environmental state, but council and local groups are seeking to restore its ecological fortunes, and rejuvenate its human use. One way of doing so is to get people on to the water for an annual flotilla, and the second of these was held a couple of days ago, on Saturday. Kayaks, rowboats of all shapes and sizes, paddleboards and a couple of yachts took part. The only thing missing was a waka – but for good reason, because the local iwi, Te Kawerau a Maki, was signing its Treaty settlement on the same day. Perhaps future flotillas will see waka return to the Whau.
