Imagine Better is an organisation that helps people with disabilities and their families a imagine a better life for family members and supports them to achieve their goals. It recently hosted a conference in Auckland to explore alternatives to New Zealand’s current disability service systems. Their message is that services can be limiting and damaging.
Carol Stiles went along to meet the international key-note speakers and to hear the stories of New Zealanders who have pursued a better life.
Twenty-three year old Gabrielle, who needs 24 hour care, has gone flatting in her community, is learning the drums and is the local bagpipe club’s number one supporter. Her mother is delighted with the rich, full life her daughter is now able to lead.
Taranaki-based Chris has a successful micro-business making dog biscuits, he works 7 hours a week in a café, and hosts a half hour show on Access Radio.
