One In Five for Sunday 23 March 2014
Taupae Connelly lives in Kaiwaka, Northland surrounded by whanau. When he was young up he didn’t know of anyone else with a disability in his community. Taupae calls himself a “thalidomide baby"; born with physical disabilities as a result of a drug women took to alleviate morning sickness during pregnancy. Taupae talks about his childhood, growing up with a disability and his efforts to get compensation from the distributors of thalidomide.
