Predator-free in the city
Rare native birds are spilling over the predator-proof fence around Wellington’s Zealandia sanctuary, and taking up residence in local reserves - where they’re getting a helping hand from their human neighbours. Alison Ballance joins Tim Park from Wellington City Council and Paul Ward from the Polhill Restoration project to discover how the walkers, runners and mountain bikers that use the reserve are trapping predators to help out nesting kaka and tieke or saddlebacks, and how this is part of a wider ambition for a wildlife-friendly Wellington – and a predator-free New Zealand.
