Queen's death: Academic discusses Queen Elizabeth II
King Charles comes to the throne at 73 and has served a very long apprenticeship unlike the Queen who came to the throne at 25. As heir, he spoke out on issues that tread close to politics... from architecture to organic farming. And his first marriage - to Diana, the Princess of Wales - was mercilessly dissected by the media and remains for many the defining event of his public life. But, in his first speech as King this morning, the Sovereign said his life would change as he took up his new responsibilities... unable to devote so much time to the charities and issues he cared for so deeply. The King was clear that his duty now was to serve; and to "uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of" the role of Sovereign. Vernon Bogdanor is Professor of government at King's College London and writes about the monarchy. He spoke to Kim Hill.
