Art Activism and Tattoos
A canary on a bomb
Artist Lauren Lysaght has made hearses, kit-set tombstones, even bombs encased in perspex. Each of her pieces is a tongue in cheek or provocative poke at life's injustices. Now in her sixties she's getting some work done on her own body… tattoos depicting the oeuvres of women artists she admires. Lauren says her social conscience stems from a misspent youth, some of it in a mental institution, and her work in the early protest movement. She uses what her publicity calls 'low rent' materials, forgotten or overlooked by others.
