Keen to Zine.
Zine - U.S. colloq. - shortened version of Fanzine - A magazine for fans, especially those of science fiction - OED.
Zines (pronounced zeen), are self-published, non-commercial publications, often created by a single person. They come in a large variety of sizes, shapes and persuasions and are often photocopied. And on a wet winter Saturday, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate a DIY approach to publishing at the second Auckland Zinefest, held in St Kevins Arcade on Karangahape Road.
The festival is organised by Tessa Stubbing, who began collecting zines when she was 15. Such is her obsession, Tessa admits to never having thrown one away and as a result, she has now amassed over 1000 of them.
Spectrum's Lisa Thompson visits the festival to meet Tessa and the many individuals that contribute to the thriving zine community.
