Hindu New Zealand
Minority groups in New Zealand often wonder what they can do to hold on to their identity in the wider community. But Hindus here ask what they can do for the rest of us. HOTA – Hindu Organisations, Temples and Associations Forum – held a workshop two years ago encouraging Hindus to better serve their community and seek common ground with mainstream New Zealand.
MP and former race relations commissioner Dr Rajen Prasad (right) facilitated the workshop, which sought to ensure that the good things Hinduism has to offer are available to all who want them.
He spoke to producer Justin Gregory at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Auckland to talk about progress made since then, the question of public image and how Hinduism needs to be recognised as a religion and not an ethnic grouping.
