Any moment now people in Christchurch and Auckland will have the chance to behold a rare sight - or should we say smell - with a plant, known as the Corpse flower, coming very close to blooming.
The plant, native to Sumatra, only flowers for about a day every seven to twelve years and when it does, it smells of rotting flesh.
The plant is on the cusp of flowering at both the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and the Auckland Domain Wintergardens.
Leigh-Marama McLachlan speaks with the director of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens Wolfgang Bopp and head of parks and services at Auckland Council Mark Bowater.
