Te Waonui for week ending Friday 8 September 2017
Nā Tarahae Ko Mate, Jealousy is our downfall. This was the debate topic at Te Reo ki Tua, a Māori language symposium hosted by Ngāti Kahungunu. Debaters include Leon Blake, Kingi Kiriona, Elizabeth Mana Hunkin, Ropata Hepi and Arapeta Hakiwai. Is Jealousy part of the history of the love triangle between ancestors Tamatakutai, Kahungunu and Rongomaiwahine? Is Jealousy a reason to improve a person's own life? or does it cause over-inflated egos whereby young people are dismissed despite their obvious talents? In light of Māori Language Week, Te Waonui features highlights of this te reo Māori debate.
