Gisborne woman's gang intimidation

From The Panel, 4:09 pm on 17 April 2018

Yesterday we covered a story published in the Gisborne Herald about a woman who stood up to gang members and was advised to leave town after a year of intimidation. Social justice advocate and lifetime Black Power member Denis O'Reilly defends Police and says they have acted well in the situation.

*After we went to air Police supplied us with this statement:

Police strongly refutes the comments made by some media that Police advised a woman and her daughter to move away from Gisborne because of threats made to them by gangs.

Police have arrested five people in connection to the threats against this victim who absolutely did the right thing by testifying and we are committed to helping her find a new home in any way we can.

Victims are at the centre of everything we do and reports that imply Police cannot protect victims who do the right thing by testifying against people who engage in criminal behaviour is concerning.

Police want to assure the public that if they have concerns for their safety they will be taken seriously. Anyone who is fearful for their safety is encouraged to call 111 in the first instance.

Police’s ability to keep the community, and indeed victims, safe is extremely important. Misinformation such as this causes irreparable damage to the trust and confidence the public places in Police to keep them safe.
