The Panel with Mike Rehu and Cindy Mitchener (Part 1)

From The Panel, 4:03 pm on 15 April 2019

It's been revealed a New Zealand nurse, Louisa Akavi, was captured by Islamic State in Syria more than five years ago. No one knows her fate. The story has been under wraps for fear her situation may become more dangerous if it was reported. International law expert Al Gillespie, from the University of Waikato, explains why the story has gone public now. : A pamphlet described as racist by Justice Minister Andrew Little has been dropped in an Auckland suburb, prompting a complaint. The pamphlet by a group called "One Law for All" contained anti-Maori sentiment, calling for the scrapping of the Waitangi Tribunal and saying Maori have benefitted from colonisation. We ask Law Professor Andrew Geddis from the University of Otago how or our hate speech law could be changed, and should it, to deal with this kind of discourse. Wallabies fullback Israel Folau has responded to the furor over his controversial instagram post last week. He's standing by the post he made which said the homosexuals and other so-called sinners would go to hell. The panelists discuss the latest development.
