Namaste. For the first time in New Zealand lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender or “LGBT” from our South East Asian community are speaking out in a ground-breaking theatre piece titled Mumbai Monologues by Agaram Productions. The boundaries of previously taboo subjects and the conservative approach towards homosexuality is only now beginning to be broken down, particularly by the younger generation within the community. Clashes between faith and individual choice seems to be the biggest issue, but to understand their perspectives Lynda Chanwai-Earle is heading backstage after a show at Tapac, the Auckland Performing Art Centre, to learn more.
