The many voices of ngā taonga pūoro (Māori musical instruments) are interwoven with the deep tones of the double bass on Al Fraser and Phil Boniface's album Ponguru.
Al Fraser is one of New Zealand's leading performers of ngā taonga pūoro, while Phil Boniface is an acoustic bassist and composer who lived and played in Canada for 11 years.
They met and first performed together while studying jazz at Massey University (now the New Zealand School of Music) in the late '90s.
Ponguru (te reo Māori for 'sonorous' or 'resonant') was recorded by Lee Prebble and is available via Rattle Records.
