Although many music festivals were cancelled this month, Womad 2020 went ahead in New Plymouth’s Brooklands Park in March 2020.
RNZ Music recorded several live acoustic sessions with WOMAD performers in the Conference Room at the New Plymouth Autolodge Motel.
Featured artists include maestro violinist Dr L Subramanium who's been dubbed the Niccolò Paganini (19th century Italian composer and violinist) of Indian classical music.
We also recorded a solo session with Senegalese kora virtuoso Seckou Keita who later performed a couple of brilliant shows with Welsh harpist Catrin Finch.
From Mali, we recorded Trio Da Kali and Auckland’s Black Quartet shared with us the first and only rehearsal for their Womad performance. The mutual respect was palpable.
Also recorded was an Acapella song by four women from Finland called Tuuletar.
It all makes for an interesting no-frills listening experience where the music just shines!
