The Auckland Council has voted against a motion to revoke a Special Housing Area development in south Auckland.
Fletcher Residential is proposing to build up to 480 houses on 33 hectares next to the Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve in Ihumatao, Mangere.
Representatives from a group opposing the development presented a petition saying the rural land needed to be protected due to its cultural and environmental significance.
The group asked the council to move the development to Ascot Road in Mangere.
The motion was defeated 12 to 5.
