An organ donor has told MPs a bill to compensate donors is a good start.
The member's bill proposes to provide financial assistance of up to 80 percent of the donor's pre-operation earnings. It also provides for childcare assistance for those who need it while they recover.
The legislation is before the health select committee.
Kerryn Yule, who donated a kidney to her niece, told MPs she would like to see full financial compensation for donors who, she said, underwent a traumatic process.
Although 80 percent was a good start, 100 percent should be the target to ensure donors would be financially supported without having to rely on their own resources, Ms Yule said.
