An elderly person with impaired sight has been scammed out of more than $10,000 - their life savings - by a man and a woman in Canterbury.
The police say a scammer phoned the Methven victim multiple times on Saturday morning.
During the last call, another scammer knocked on the door claiming to be from Kiwibank.
That scammer told the victim they needed their debit card, as they had a replacement, but gave the victim a gift card instead.
Detective Sergeant Jennifer Hooke says the scammers then withdrew money in Rolleston and Christchurch overnight.
She says no reputable company visits homes to exchange bank cards, or phones customers asking for pin numbers or other personal information.
She says anyone who has had similar calls should contact the police immediately.
