Farmers within a river catchment south of Ashburton will have to decrease nitrogen emissions by 36 percent over the next 20 years.
The Canterbury Regional Council has signed off a plan for farmers in the Hinds area today, in an effort to cut the amount of nitrogen in local waterways.
Council commissioner Peter Skelton said it had been a challenge to find ways to reduce nutrient discharge while maintaining a vibrant agricultural community and economy.
