The Māori King has been awarded Hamilton's highest honour.
King Tuheitia, who celebrates 10 years in the role in August, will receive the 'Freedom of the City' after a unanimous decision by the city council.
Mayor Julie Hardaker said awarding King Tuheitia the honour was a way to acknowledge his contribution to the community ahead of the 10-year milestone.
His late mother, Māori Queen Te Arikinui Dame Te Ātairangikaahu, also held the honour.
Only 12 living people are able to hold it at a time.
