MPs told visit by US official was not TPP bullying

MPs have been told a visit by a US official last week was not used to pressure the government into further concessions on the Trans Pacific Partnership deal.

New Zealand's lead TPP negotiator David Walker appeared before the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee this morning.

TPP critic and Auckland University law professor Jane Kelsey has said the Americans were trying to bully the government into getting what they wanted.

But David Walker told the Select Committee this morning that was not the case.

"That official came here as a part of the programme of visits that the USTR (United States Trade Representative) is undertaking to swap notes about process and timelines for each country's domestic procedures for ratification."
