Fletcher Building has opened a $5 million aluminium factory in Christchurch to help service the needs of the city's rebuild.
The Wigram facility will powder-coat aluminium that has been produced in Auckland, for distribution to the the company's franchisees in Christchurch and the rest of the South Island.
Fletcher Aluminium's business manager for windows and doors Gary Kirk says the factory will employ up to 70 people and will help reduce lead times for franchisees ordering aluminium.
Mr Kirk told Radio New Zealand's business reporter that the franchisees carry out most of the final joinery production but that they will also be supported by a doors and windows manufacturing team at the factory.
