About 120 workers at Fonterra's Canpac site in Hamilton face losing their jobs as the dairy giant plans to shut the canning and packaging facility in July.
Low product volumes and increasing complexities in production has created challenging economic conditions for the facility, Fonterra chief operating officer, Anna Palairet said.
Palairet said Fonterra will now work through a consultation process including exploring potential redeployment opportunities before operations are planned to come to an end.
Among those affect are 80 union members.
Dairy Workers Union national secretary Chris Flatt told Morning Report workers were in shock at Tuesday's meeting.
"Tough day to go through."
It was rare to have a full site closure, Flatt said.
He said union was working closesly with Fonterra to find redeployment opportunities for staff and there was a freeze on hiring at other sites.
It was important the workers had time to work through their options, he said.
