The NZX50 index fell 36 points, or 1%, to close at 3317 on turnover of $85 million on Thursday.
In currency markets, at 5.20pm the NZ dollar was at 77.74 US, 76.77 Australian cents, 48.87 pence, 60.45 yen and 0.575 euro.
The Trade Weighted Index was at 68.7.
Telecom was up 0.5 cents to $2.695, Fletcher Building was down 20 cents at $6.28 and Contact Energy was down 7 cents at $5.64.
Sky City Entertainment was up 2 cents at $3.43, Sky Network TV was down 6 cents at $5.43, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare was down 2 cents to $2.33 and The Warehouse was unchanged at $3.30.
Steel & Tube Holdings was down 19 cents at $2.21 after issuing a profit downgrade for the half year.
Mainfreight was up 3 cents to $10.25 after a lift in half year profit to $29.1 million, AMP was down 17 cents to $5.45 and Metlifecare was down 9 cents to $2.45.
Nuplex was down 7 cents to $2.62.
