A Christchurch City Councillor is casting doubt on plans for one of the city's major rebuild projects.
A new convention centre is one of the main anchor projects in the rebuild and has been described as pivotal by tourism groups.
Cr Glenn Livingstone says he's not sure the new 2000 seat centre would be worth what it would cost to build. He doubts the city needs it and has seen no case to support it.
Before the earthquakes, the convention industry was worth $80 - $100 million per year to the city.
Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter said the convention industry was the driving force behind $40 - $50 million worth of visitor spending.
