Police have ruled out any ties to a so-called "anti-corruption organisation" that has been active on Chinese social media platform WeChat recently.
An Auckland man claiming to be the leader of the organisation had sent numerous "notices" on WeChat, police said in a statement on Tuesday.
Screenshots of the police logo were included in several of these "notices", which could mislead recipients to believe that it been sent by New Zealand Police, the statement said.
"To be clear, that organisation (the anti-corruption organisation) has no enforcement powers and is not associated to the New Zealand Police in any way," the statement said.
"This individual does not have any powers of arrest," it said.
"We understand that the targeted nature of these 'notices' have caused upset in the community."
Police said any matters reported will be assessed against New Zealand law to identify whether any offending had been committed.
"Police continue to encourage anyone who has been impacted by these 'notices' to seek advice from Netsafe or seek legal advice around civil proceedings," the statement said.
