NZ dairy under threat from Dutch, Germans

11:02 am on 5 August 2013

A New Zealand company that makes infant formula says the Netherlands or Germany could benefit from the Fonterra contamination scare if the matter is not handled carefully.

Fonterra revealed on Saturday that 38 tonnes of whey contained a bacteria that can cause potentially fatal botulism.

AAP reports the Netherlands and Germany are strong dairy nations that are well positioned to profit.

Peak Nutrition is unaffected by the scare. Chief executive Stephen Julian said the Dutch market had been "hot on our heels for a long time".

"They are renowned for their dairy production and have much to gain from our latest dairy crisis and Germany isn't far behind," Mr Julian said.

He said he sympathised with New Zealand parents who could suffer two-fold, through both the formula safety scare and the potential ongoing economic repercussions if the crisis is not resolved quickly.

AAP reports Synlait Milk has also released a statement confirming all its dairy products, including infant formula, are unaffected.
