The Timaru shot putter, Tom Walsh, has made an emphatic statement in the qualifying round of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Walsh has set a Games record with his one and only throw.
Needing 19.90 metres to automatically advance to the final tomorrow, Walsh wasted little time in getting down to business.
With his opening throw, he surpassed his personal best by a centimetre, throwing 21.24 metres to set the Games record.
That was a metre further than his nearest rival and almost a metre-70 further than his out of sorts compatriot, Jacko Gill, whose best throw was 19.54 metres.
Gill finished inside the top 12 however, to advance to tomorrow's final.
