A search is on again for New Zealand's top town.

The television show Top Town will return to screens next year.

The show, which began in 1976 and was originally hosted by Sir Howard Morrison was cancelled in 1990. It featured towns and cities competing in an outdoor obstacle course events.

Eyeworks Production says the revamped version will appeal to a modern audience with less egg-and-spoon and more crash-and-smash with lots of mud.

He says Greymouth, the reigning champion, has already put itself forward to defend its title.

So far, 20 other towns have entered. Regional heats will be held.

The show will be filmed in Christchurch in December.
