A dog attack that left 27 sheep dead and two injured is one of five incidents in the past week, according to the Central Otago District Council.
The mass mauling happened at an Alexandra property owned by Robin Ballantyne sometime on Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
The council's planning and environment manager Louise van der Voort says an investigation has begun.
"We've had some descriptions of dogs in the area and it's my understanding that one of the dogs has been shot - that wasn't by the council.
"We have a description of another dog, which we are following up, but we haven't actually got a firm identification at this stage."
Ms van der Voort says it is not known if the same dogs were involved in all five incidents.
